y hands flash in front of my face, a mix of pale blue from my Light and white from the glowing temple.
Something about this place has an effect on the wildlife; there’s no fish here, not even the tiny ones that’ve been flitting around in my peripheral vision like fireflies. The closer I get, the more an overwhelming sense of magic pervades everything. It seems way potent for a vodyanoy, at least the way Rada had described them. I never had the feeling they were adept with magic like this, but then again, perhaps it’s a simple fear spell, and I’m not crapping my pants (or lack thereof) and madly fleeing because I’m an elf. Does being resistant to charm make me resistant to magic, thus forcing me to be scared? Is that why this feels foreboding instead of panic-inducing?
You’re still worrying about the bukavac swallowing you whole.
I try to sigh with water in my throat. Cat, you’re not helping.
The sense of him grinning floods my thoughts. I try my best.
Eventually, I glide up to the blindingly white area by two stone doors. The ziggurat has eight ‘steps,’ but they’re clearly not intended to be walked on like stairs since they’re so huge. I dive down, gliding closer, and swing myself around to alight on my feet at the second tier up from the bottom, right in front of an entrance about half again as wide as a standard door. The plain stone slab has a seam down the middle, like a set of double-doors with no handles.
I feel even smaller than usual this close to the wall, as the next step is several feet over my head. I’ve got no explanation for why a structure like this is sitting at the bottom of the Volga River. Maybe the government built it? Aliens? An ancient civilization? Oh… maybe it came over during the Convergence and didn’t realize it was going to land at the bottom of a river. Odd that no one noticed the splash.
A cloud of snowy white hair blooms around my head as I study the wall before me, brushing sediment out of a groove with my fingertips as I trace them down the surface out of curiosity. The stone is coarse, but coated in a fairly thick layer of slimy algae.
Been here a while. Which rules out that it appeared because of the Convergence.
I think of that woman and her boy, how confused they must be… and try to send them a mental message to hang on. I’m almost here.
Pawing at the door reveals a sigil: a pair of concentric circles an inch apart and ten inches across that contain a glyph, or perhaps something closer to a pentacle, only the downward pointing spar is much bigger than the rest of the points. Overall, the design resembles a stylized fox head. Letters run around the sigil between the two circles, though they’re neither Cyrillic nor―when I remove the translation amulet for a moment―English. I remember my parents
